Dan Harris started to lose his vision when he was 6 years old from Stargardt disease, a form of macular degeneration. Now aged 22, Dan is a student at the University of Melbourne, and has lost all of his central vision, but retains some peripheral vision. Studying at both school and university as a student with low vision has involved the use of a range of devices and software programs to enable him to access the information he needs. It has never been easy but by using the right tools for the job at hand has helped him achieve his goals.

OrCam helps Dan’s ambitions to become a university lecturer.
Recently Dan purchased an OrCam MyReader as a tool that would enable him to access text wherever he was and whenever he needed it.
“I was quite sceptical about OrCam at first, but then amazed how much independence it gave me in my studies. I also had really low expectation about finishing my studies, but OrCam made a huge difference in my life. I don’t need to rely on other people as much anymore” Dan added.
“OrCam is incredibly liberating, you can just put it on and point (at the text)” he said. “It has been a great study tool, especially around exam time, and for the first time I have been able to explore the library and find the books I need”.
Dan is really enjoying the university environment and would like to seek a position at university when he finishes his studies.
